3 Things you need to know about WordPress Gutenberg

Gutenberg – a new publishing innovation from WordPress is all set to revolutionize the art of publishing! Gutenberg is the new editor for WordPress. The project is named after Johannes Gutenberg, who invented a movable type printing press.

Gutenberg is introduced as a solution to the drawbacks of current editor. The current editor requires the use of shortcodes and HTML which scares beginners. Gutenberg’s ultimate goal is to make WordPress an easier platform for all.

1. Reason behind Gutenberg

• The goal of the block editor is to make adding rich content to WordPress simple and enjoyable.  (From Wordpress.org)
• Gutenberg enables WordPress to build content layouts, not just write articles. It is one of the many transitions happening in WordPress toward a more simplified user experience. (According to Zack Katz, a developer for WordPress)
• Users will finally be able to build the sites they see in their imaginations. They’ll be able to do things on mobile they’ve never been able to before. They’ll never have to see a shortcode again. Text pasted from Word will get cleaned up and converted to blocks automatically and instantly. (According to Matt Mullenweg)

2. Gutenberg is currently a Plugin 

Gutenberg can be installed on any WordPress site as a plugin. It can be downloaded directly from the WordPress plugin directory.

The plugin is usually updated regularly as it is in developing phase. They clear out bugs and error and add new features from feedbacks from users.

This plugin is in its beta and therefore, don’t forget to update whenever there is an update available.

3. Gutenberg Will Be Included in WordPress 5.0

No official announcements have been made about including Gutenberg in WordPress. But it is expected that the new feature will be rolled out in the WordPress 5.0 update. But don't worry the current editor will be available as a plugin called the Classic editor. The Classic editor plugin can be downloaded from WordPress plugin directory.
